We interview Kimmo Niskala, Operations Manager at Dunderbyggen, about the company’s custom-built trailers and its long-standing collaboration with Transtronic. A collaboration in which the sensor solution has been continuously developed to meet high demands for steering performance, durability, and reliability.
The company has a long history of manufacturing custom-built trailers, primarily for forestry machines. The company was taken over by its current owners in 2024 and was previously owned by Lindgrens Åkeri. Both the unique trailer concept and the name originate from an entrepreneur and innovator known as “Dunder”.
We have continued to build on and refine this concept under new management and under the Dunderbyggen name. The current trailer is well equipped and uses high-quality steering technology and hydraulics to deliver exactly what heavy-duty transport requires. One of the unique aspects of the solution is that we offer a four-axle truck. The trailer itself is a rigid construction with no articulation or bending, while its steerable axle or axles follow the truck’s turning movements. Depending on the model, the trailer has one or two axles, and the semi-trailer has its own registration number. Today, the trailer is sold either as a standalone trailer or as part of a complete truck solution.
How did you get in contact with us, and why did you choose Transtronic?
Initially, the solution required a smart sensor on the truck’s front axle and another on the trailer, allowing the two to communicate with each other for coordinated steering. The trailer axle needs to precisely follow the truck’s turning movements as part of the vehicle’s steering automation. We had experience with other solutions where recurring moisture damage resulted in reduced steering response, frequent component replacements, and increased service requirements. This led Dunderbyggen to look for a more robust and higher-quality solution.
Transtronic’s sensors have been part of the solution since 2018, including on earlier versions of the trailer.
Since then, the two companies have jointly developed a customized sensor solution that today functions seamlessly as an important part of the overall steering system and driving experience. Since 2018, Transtronic has contributed to developing and refining several features, including:
• Reinforced sensor – for improved and faster response
• Dual bearings – for increased stability
• Double sealing – for improved protection against moisture
• Sealed connectors and stainless-steel construction – for increased durability
Can you tell us about the challenges that existed before and during the collaboration/project?
The previous sensor solution was analog and based on DC voltage, while Transtronic’s solution uses CAN bus communication. This provides better compatibility with our control system and offers several advantages in terms of ongoing adjustments and performance.
With our previous supplier, we experienced recurring problems where moisture entered the sensor and its shaft, causing components to stop working or fail. In the early stages, we encountered challenges of a similar nature with Transtronic. The difference was that they quickly adapted both their product and approach to our solution. With our feedback, they have continued to improve and refine the solution. This has been invaluable to us.
What are the sensors used for, and what do they measure?
The system uses a total of two or three sensors depending on whether the trailer has one or two axles, including one sensor on the truck’s front axle. The function remains the same regardless of the model. Because the trailer is long, the system requires a sensor solution that can directly and accurately relay the correct turning radius between the truck and trailer to achieve precise and controlled steering through turns.
What solutions have been developed, and in which areas?
• Customized sensors for truck and trailer
• Further development of both sensor software and hardware
Which products have been used?
• Stainless-steel boom joint transducer
What concrete results have been achieved in terms of increased efficiency, profitability, and similar outcomes?
Both our test driver and our customers are very positive about the driving experience. They describe the steering as more responsive, with the trailer reacting directly to steering-wheel input and tracking the road very well.
For us, it is about delivering a top-class solution to our customers, and Transtronic has been, and continues to be, an important part of that as an OEM supplier.
How have our service and availability been experienced?
Fast response and very good service. We always receive personal contact and a strong commitment to resolving our questions and issues.
When we call, they answer, and overall the experience has been very good.
Would you recommend Transtronic?
Absolutely.
