CASE: How Häv & Gräv reduces costs by up to 15% through exact drilling

We interview LM Cederblad, blasting supervisor and Transtronic enthusiast at Häv & Gräv. A company that has been using Transtronic’s products with great results for almost 10 years.

How did you get in contact with us and what was the reason Transtronic was chosen?

The interest in better measurement and control arose when the drill rig was purchased. This equipment is not standard, but it was recommended by the manufacturer.

I calculated the cost versus the savings we achieve through fewer man-hours, reduced machine wear, and essentially being able to eliminate the need for re-drilling. Either because the hole was drilled too short or too deep. My conclusion was that with this equipment we can save a significant amount of money over time. In addition, the work becomes more enjoyable when you avoid unpleasant surprises.

The instruments are easy to install, easy to integrate, and easy to learn.

What is your role today and how do you use Transtronic’s products?

I currently work as a blasting supervisor at Häv & Gräv, where we have two T15 rigs – which have the most Transtronic products installed. We also have two T30 rigs with pilot products that are being tested for performance.

How long has the cooperation been ongoing?

It started about 9 years ago. Since then, for various reasons, I have become somewhat of an unofficial test pilot of the products. It has been interesting and rewarding for both parties. I get my feedback implemented quickly with rapid performance improvements. At the same time, Transtronic can develop its products based on direct feedback from the field.

Tell us about the challenges that existed before and during the cooperation/project?

GNSS Level
At the start of the cooperation, I began test-driving the GNSS level (height system) and we assumed that you always drilled and stopped below the base station’s height. But if I place the base station at a known height that is lower than the height where I want to drill and stop, I need to be able to distinguish that in the instrument. Based on this, Transtronic added a minus sign in the system to be able to measure under that condition. An example of how we jointly developed a product based on a requested feature, which may not always feel obvious.

Automatic shut-off at desired depth
To avoid having to be present at the end of drilling, I requested that the drill automatically stop at the desired depth. Transtronic solved this, and I can now simply set my desired depth in the system. While the drill is running, I can prepare for the next hole and do other work without having to monitor the drilling. The instrument sends a stop signal to the drill when the set drilling depth is reached, which then stops automatically. A very convenient feature that allows me to significantly increase my efficiency during the day.

Which products have been used?

  • GNSS Level – So you know you are drilling the correct depth.
  • GPS Compass – So you get the correct drilling direction. Allows you to move the rig wherever you want.
  • Laser receiver – Useful if you are working indoors. Enables even bottoms when drilling.
  • Mobile display unit / inclinometer – Connected to the measuring rod or mounted on the remote control box.

How does the ongoing cooperation with Transtronic work?

We have a pleasant and constructive cooperation where we work towards common goals. The cooperation is about exchanging ideas back and forth, where we continuously test different new products and provide feedback on them. Good for us, as we gain early access to innovative solutions, and good for other similar customers who receive a more refined product.

What concrete results have been achieved regarding work methods, profitability, etc.?

Basically, the goal is to achieve high efficiency in percussion hours compared to engine hours. That is, percussion hours are when active drilling is taking place, and engine hours are the time when the machine is running whether drilling or not.

A normal level for percussion versus engine hours for a non-equipped machine is around 20–22%.

With all Transtronic instruments installed, I am at at least 35% percussion versus engine hours. My machine works in active drilling 12–15% more than a non-equipped machine. This makes a big difference when we talk about months and years.

While the machine is running, I can go and set out funnels, mark, and similar tasks.

What problems might arise in daily work if you were without these instruments?

It can quite easily result in an extra day of excavation if mistakes are made. Depending on circumstances such as rock size, the number of holes, and how many centimeters have been drilled incorrectly, this of course varies. But roughly estimated, it can amount to 25,000–100,000 SEK per project in costs if you make a mistake, usually by drilling too shallow and having to re-drill.

The major cost is that you have to excavate all the material for at least a day, then perform the drilling again. This can mean several days of extra work, fuel for machines, and excavation. From my experience, it pays to do it right the first time.

Concrete data on the costs of incorrect drilling

In my calculations from several drilling operations, I have arrived at these costs related to incorrect drilling:

  • Plan blasting: Per 10 cm too deep costs 5 SEK/m².
  • Pipe trench: Per 10 cm too deep costs 46 SEK/m for 2 holes, 57 SEK/m for 3 holes, plus the same cost for excavation and backfilling.

If you are paid for theoretical volume, you are not paid for over-drilling.

How is service and availability perceived?

Very good – quick responses. Fast at trying to solve potential problems wherever they may be.

Would you recommend Transtronic and why?

I only have positive experiences – they show great commitment to us as customers and to the products. They step in and solve problems as soon as they arise.
